Frequently Asked Questions

General
Is the toolbar really free?
Yes, you are free to download and install the toolbar, and use it as much as you like for all noncommercial uses. All we ask is that if you like the toolbar, share it with your friends. See the licensing agreement for the details
Is the toolbar some sort of Spy-ware or Ad-ware?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! We created the toolbar because we were sick and tired of being forced to view advertisements. We have no idea who you are and do not track which web sites you visit. You control which images are displayed when the toolbar discovers an ad. We do not set cookies, use web bugs, or any other tricks. You can check the code for yourself.
If the toolbar is not some sort of Spy-ware, how did you implement the counter on your home page?
The toolbar keeps track of how many ads have been removed for you. Every time the browser starts up, we send this count to www.prowebsurfer.com, where it is added to our grand total. We have no way to identify you. We do not set cookies.
Can I replace advertisements with my own pictures?
Yes. See the section on "Creating Replacement Content"
Is there a list of video demos and tutorials?
You can find a list of videos by clicking here
Why are you selling T-Shirts?
Ramen Noodles and Easy Mac cost money! All fun aside, we do not expect to make a fortune selling T-shirts. We are hoping to make enough to offset some of our web hosting costs, and we hope that T-Shirts will help to publicize the service.
Help With Installation
I installed and restarted my browser but I do not see the toolbar?
  • Check to see you are not using an old version of Firefox by using the "help->Check for Updates" menu. The toolbar will not work with versions older than Firefox 1.5
  • Firefox tries to protect you from accidentally installing unwanted software. By default your Firefox browser does not know about www.prowebsurfer.com. Firefox may have blocked the installation. If this happened, you see a very small banner on the top of the web page. Its easy to miss this message. The message is something like "to protect your computer, Firefox prevented this site from installing software on your computer". There is a button on the right hand side of the message. Pressing this button will allow the toolbar to be installed. Once you have done this, you will need to start the download process again.
  • Check to see if it was actually installed using the "tools->extensions" menu.
  • Check to see that you have Firefox configured to display the toolbar. Use the "view->toolbars" menu. Make sure the entry "PWS Toolbar" is checked.
  • If you are still having trouble, please send email to support@prowebsufer.com
How do I uninstall the toolbar?

Firefox: The toolbar is uninstalled the same way you uninstall any other add-on in Firefox.

  • Start Firefox
  • Select Tools -> Add-ons from the main menu
  • Click on PWS Toolbar in the Ad-ons list
  • Click the Uninstall button

Internet Explorer: The toolbar is uninstalled the same way you uninstall any other application on Microsoft Windows.

Passive Search
What is Passive Search?

Passive search is ProWebSurfer's term for setting preferences on what you are looking for, and using the ad replacement service to serve up results. This is a flexible service: you do not have to use it at all, you can use it selectively, or all the time. You decide. The value of this depends on what mood you are in. If you have something coming up (a birthday, a purchase, a vacation, etc.), you can let ProWebSurfer serve up links to help you find what you are looking for (weather, hotels, gifts, and so on.)

We call it "passive search" because it happens in the background, as opposed to "active search" which is what you do when you go to your favorite search engine.

How do I Search Ebay using the ProWebSurfer Toolbar?

The PWS Toolbar Ebay passive search makes it easy to find specific types of items on Ebay and view them passively, while you surf the web. Learn more about the PWS Ebay Passive Search.

Why would I want to put search results and ads in my browser after I just replaced them?

Good question. Our philosophy at ProWebSurfer has always been to put control over advertising in the hands of the user, and remove the annoying, irrelevant ads that are delivered today. Passive search allows you to search for anything you would search for in a search engine so ads (typically "sponsored links") are served up too. We believe that this is permission-based, opt-in advertising, which is good - you can choose whether you see ads, when you see them. And what you want to see. It's a good thing.

And, obviously, you do not need to use it !

Can I turn this off?

Passive Search capabilities are always available in the toolbar. You do not need to use this and your ad replacement album will be selected before any passive search results.

Does it work on all browsers?

The ProWebSurfer toolbar works on Firefox and Internet Explorer. The passive search capability is being released initially on Firefox, and will be launched on IE in the coming months.

Facebook Service Questions
What is the Facebook Friends Service?

Facebook users can now use ProWebSurfer to replace browser ads with images of their Facebook friends online. Its free, simple, and a valuable way of keeping in touch with your social network.

How does the Facebook Friends Service Work?

ProWebSurfer users who have set up this service will see a new album in their list of ProWebSurfer albums - this is called "Facebook Friends". When these users add this album, it will appear in the toolbar as an ad replacement option, allowing them to see their friends online.

I am not a ProWebSurfer User. How do I Start?

If you are not an existing ProWebSurfer user, all you need to do is to go to your Facebook profile and search for the ProWebSurfer Facebook Application. Follow the simple instructions in Facebook to add this application, and we will automatically create an account for you in ProWebSurfer. You will receive an email from us to validate your new ProWebSurfer account and (once you have downloaded the toolbar) you can start seeing friends you like instead of ads you don't!

I am an existing ProWebSurfer User. How do I set this up?

If you are already a ProWebSurfer user, you need to set up a Facebook account using the same email address in Facebook that you use for ProWebSurfer (this is important - the service will not work if the email accounts are different). Once you have your matching Facebook account, you will automatically see a new "Facebook Friends" album in your account.

Does the Facebook Friends Service work on Firefox and Internet Explorer?

Yes. Please note that this capability is available for users of the latest toolbar version. Make sure you check whether you are up to date with the latest version when you set up the Facebook album.

Will my list of friends be kept up to date?

As you change and add friends in Facebook, you will need to refresh your list in ProWebSurfer. This is done automatically when you visit the ProWebSurfer application page within Facebook. If you do this from time to time, your friend list will be kept up to date.

How do I add or remove albums from the toolbar "content" menu?

Creating Replacement Content with E-mail Image Drop Service
How much storage do I get?
You get 10mb of storage for free on our hosting service. This is enough space to store at least 1000 images taken with a typical digital camera.
I have a 10 MB camera. Will it work with the Image Drop Service?
Yes. When we receive large images we compress them so that their file size does not exceed 100K. These smaller images will still look great on the web and should down load really quickly. We do not store the original image only the compressed version. If you want to make prints, make sure you save the original version of the image.
How come my toolbar does not use my changes?
Once your receive email from the Image Drop Service you will need to either restart your browser and toolbar or use the toolbar's "options -> reload sources" feature.
Does the Image Drop Service scope new albums to be "public" or "private"?
By default, all new albums are "private". We do not change the access permission on existing albums. You can use your "My PWS" page http://www.prowebsurfer.com/pwswebsite/toolbar/priv/RegisteredUserContentAlbum.action to change the access permission.
Creating Replacement Content
How can I learn how to create my own replacement content albums?
The easiest way to create replacement albums is to use our image drop service or our mouse add functionatly. You can also create albums directly from your mypws page. Our video tutorial Creating Replacement Content shows how to use your mypws page to create replacement albums. It is about 5 min. long.
How come my replacement content looks funny?
Sometimes you will notice the replacement image appears to be out of proportion. The images may appear to be stretched or compressed. This is because the current replacement album did not contain an image that matched the aspect ratio of the original advertisement. The aspect ratio is defined as the width / height of the image. You can use the PWS Ad Replacement Test Page To test your images against typical ad sizes. If your images look funny, you might consider
  1. Adding additional images to your album
  2. Cropping your images to different sizes. Cropping typically over-writes the original image, so you will probably want to work with copies of your images, not the originals.
